The Real Cookbook

German design agency Korefe have come up with this little gem, the first and only cookbook you can read, cook and eat. I'm not sure how 'useful' design like this is, but i don't think it really matters, i love it. I've been toying with the idea of printing with edible ink onto rice paper for some time, but i fear my efforts may look a little poor in comparison now that this has emerged. Certainly good for inspiration though.

Saturday Morning Egg

As part of some experimentation for my new brief, I 'deconstructed' a fried egg. As it turns out molecular gastronomy is not just odd states of food chucked on a plate willy nilly. For a good long time, this did just look like i'd dropped my breakfast. Onwards. Upwards.

47. Taste

I was nudged in the direction of Visionaire, and came across issue 47. Taste. It's a collaboration between flavorists, contemporary artists, chefs and photographers. The tastes offered are pretty conceptual, covering themes like 'Mother', 'Guilty', and 'Life'. The flavours are combined with artwork that interprets the theme, and the whole thing is generally packaged fairly nicely.
Interesting idea.

Pop Up Shop Success

A few of us recently held a Christmas pop up shop to raise money for our degree show. Everything on sale was handmade, and xmas themed. I paired up and made a variety of wooden snowflake decorations in three different sizes.
It was very exciting to actually sell out (we'd made about 80!) before the end of the day, so we're planning on making a second batch this week coming. If anyone fancies some for their tree get in touch.

100% Chocolate

Oh but to visit this shop in Tokyo. I somehow stumbled across The 100% Chocolate Cafe whilst trawling the net yesterday. I love the packaging and pretty much everything about them, especially the slightly pharmaceutical look. I can't decide if i'd want to eat, collect or apply all of these squares topically. I can imagine spending hours choosing which of the 56 flavours to go for.
Oh so nice!

Vitamins, Minerals & Nice Packaging

I've always been been pro-vitamins and minerals, but from food, not a bottle (unless medical circumstances mean one requires extra help) but i have to say i really find the packaging of these Origin Dietary Supplements really appealing. I love the simplicity, and the hierarchy of the information. I enjoy that there's nothing more than the necessary type. I think they work really well, I want to collect them! Probably not that healthy really...

Wimbledon Final: On Paper

WIM•BLE•DON from BRYANKU on Vimeo.
Thought this was a really nice simple idea that works really well with the added soundtrack from the 2008 final. I've been watching bits of this years Wimbledon here and there and find myself really getting into it. Have you been watching any?

A Birthday Book

My best friend Rachel wanted to make something special for her Dad's birthday (last Friday) and so she decided to write a collection of short stories about all the weird and wonderful (and hilarious) things her family have done over the years. They are not a normal family by any means, so stories had titles that involved cooking iguanas, blowing family members up and flying planes. Rach asked me if i could help her turn her word document stories into something that looked a little easier on the eyes, and this was the outcome...

Neglect Part 2

It's been a while since i've felt so absent and distracted from this bit of space. I've been knuckling down to some serious work over the past seven days, and haven't felt inspired by much else really, not enough to share on here anyway. I'm working on re-designing Flux magazine, my last project of 2nd year. I really want to go all out for it which explains my absence from the blogging world. One of my tutors is the art director for the magazine, and he's offered work experience on the design of the real magazine as reward to the best few who do well in this project. As fantastic as that would be, it's not what's driving me to put so much effort in. I think what is, is the fact that after the 12th May i will be without constant projects until the end of September, and i already know i'll get bored, so i'm making the most of this one while i have it.

For your info, the articles in the issue i'm redesigning are on;

Pina Bausch
Federico Fellini
Antoni Tapies
Ann Demeulemeester
Philip Glass
So i'm currently spending most of my time researching them, writing articles and working on possible design routes and themes to tie the magazine together. Fun times.

The Flavour Thesaurus

Saw this book in Waterstones just after Christmas and thought it was a brilliant idea (and very pretty), but didn't get it due to insufficient disposable income. It's half price on Amazon now, think i might treat myself. Cover designed by Peter Dawson of Grade Design.

Adventures in Moving Image

Last night, a few of the troopers on the course headed out to an evening lecture given by Shane Walter from One Dot Zero, held at the Manchester Conference Centre. I wasn't hugely familiar with their work, but ever interested, i went along. It was a really inspiring lecture, Shane seemed easy going, and spoke really well. It was amazing seeing the range of work the company has under its belt, and it wasn't surprising that he had trouble describing One Dot Zero in a nutshell. At the end of the talk, Shane gave us a list of things that he had learnt over the years in the business, which i thought was a nice touch. Some of the advice served as little reminders for me, such as 'Travel' and i especially liked 'Make friends, not contacts'. Here's a video of some of their work at the V&A museum, but you should really visit their website to get a better idea of what they do.
